Digestive Effects
Many people with lactose maldigestion tolerate small servings of live-culture yogurt better than milk because bacterial enzymes help break down lactose. However, tolerance varies, and larger portions may still cause gas, bloating, or cramps. If a product is heat-treated after culturing, it may not provide the same lactose-digesting help as a live-culture yogurt. Individuals with IBS or high sensitivity to dairy carbohydrates may need to test tolerance with smaller amounts.
