Red peppers (Capsicum annuum) were first domesticated in Mesoamerica thousands of years ago and reached Europe and Asia after the 15th century Columbian exchange. Drying peppers into powders and flakes made them easy to store and trade. Today most commercial red pepper and paprika come from cultivars grown in the Americas, Spain, Hungary, India, and China.
