Peas (Pisum sativum L.) are one of humanity’s oldest crops across the Mediterranean and Near East. The tough outer skin (the hull) is separated during splitting into ‘split peas’; that hull, once a milling by-product, became a commercial ‘pea hull fiber’ after modern dry milling and air-classification equipment made it possible to concentrate insoluble fiber for use in breads, cereals, snacks, and nutrition bars.

Trials using 10–15 g/day show that most people tolerate pea fiber, but some experience more bloating, abdominal noises, and gas. In healthy older adults, 10 g/day did not change stool frequency or form, indicating it may not act like a stool‑softening soluble fiber. People with sensitive guts (e.g., IBS) often do better with smaller amounts at first and a slow step‑up over 1–2 weeks. Drinking adequate fluids may help comfort as insoluble fiber adds bulk.
Limit Consumption
People with known legume or peanut allergies should review products containing pea ingredients with their clinician; cross‑reactivity between pea and peanut has been documented in sensitized individuals, even though pea is not a U.S. “Big 9” allergen.
