Periclase—the mineral form of magnesium oxide—occurs in nature, but modern food-grade MgO is usually made by heating (calcining) magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate. Potential Concerns
The biggest concern is gastrointestinal upset at high supplemental intakes; stay within adult ULs and count magnesium from all supplements and fortified products. MgO is a refined, calcined mineral, not hydrogenated, and major safety reviews found low toxicological concern at food-use levels. The real risk is overuse and the resulting laxative effect, not long-term toxicity. Another practical issue is low bioavailability: relying on MgO alone may not raise magnesium levels as much as expected, especially if stomach acid is low.
Potential Benefits
Magnesium oxide lets manufacturers add elemental magnesium to foods and supplements in a compact, low-cost form. It is also used to prevent clumping and to adjust acidity; those are texture and stability roles rather than nutritional effects. Because MgO is poorly soluble, the share your body absorbs is lower than from forms like magnesium citrate, so it may be better for topping up intake than correcting a deficiency. If you are trying to improve magnesium status, the form of magnesium can matter as much as the milligram amount.
Digestive Effects
At doses near or above the adult UL for supplemental magnesium (about 250–350 mg/day elemental), loose stools, cramping, and sometimes nausea are common. Unabsorbed magnesium draws water into the intestines, leading to a laxative effect. Fortified foods usually contain far less per serving, so most people tolerate them well. Sensitivity varies by person and by stomach acidity; large single doses on an empty stomach are more likely to cause symptoms.
Limit Consumption
People with kidney impairment may have trouble clearing excess magnesium and should avoid high supplemental intakes and consult a clinician. Older adults and those on acid-reducing medicines (such as PPIs) may absorb less from MgO because stomach acid helps dissolve it. MgO is permitted in infant formula under U.S. regulations; infants should only receive magnesium-containing products as directed by pediatric care. If you already use magnesium-containing laxatives or antacids, count that magnesium toward your supplemental total to avoid exceeding your tolerance.
