Commercial HFCS emerged after discovery of heat-stable glucose isomerase in the 1960s (Japan and U.S.). U.S. corn refiners scaled production in the 1970s as a cost-effective sucrose alternative, and by the 1980s HFCS largely replaced sucrose in many U.S. soft drinks. In the EU it’s known as isoglucose or (fructose-)glucose syrup and historically capped by sugar quotas until 2017.

Large servings of sugary drinks can cause bloating or stomach discomfort in some people. Individuals with fructose malabsorption or IBS may notice gas, diarrhea, or cramping after high‑fructose loads; tolerance varies widely. Because common HFCS types contain both glucose and fructose, many people tolerate them similarly to sucrose at typical portions, but symptoms can still occur with large amounts. As with any sweetened beverage, rapid intake on an empty stomach can feel worse than small amounts taken with meals.
Limit Consumption
Infants and toddlers under 2 years should avoid any added sugars, including HFCS; for everyone age 2 and up, aim for less than 10% of calories from added sugars. People with diabetes or insulin resistance should minimize added sugars and prioritize unsweetened beverages. Those with IBS or known fructose malabsorption may experience GI symptoms after high‑sugar drinks and may benefit from limiting large, single servings. High exposure to sugary drinks increases caries risk in children and adults, so good dental hygiene and limiting frequency of sweet beverages are important.
