Ginger likely originated in Southeast Asia and was traded along ancient maritime routes into India, China, and the Middle East. Classical texts describe its use more than 2,000 years ago. The edible part is the rhizome, harvested, cleaned, and either used fresh or dried and ground. Modern production is centered in India, China, Nigeria, and Indonesia, with global trade in dried slices, powders, oils, and oleoresins.

The main consumer risk with dried spice is microbiological contamination if supplier controls are weak; choose reputable brands and products that follow validated kill steps. At high supplemental doses, some people experience mild heartburn, bloating, or diarrhea; food-level amounts are much lower and usually well tolerated. Concentrated oils and oleoresins (made with ethanol, water, or supercritical CO2) are far more potent than the dried spice and can be irritating on contact, though this is mainly a handling issue. There is no established ADI for ginger as a spice, and major assessments have not flagged genotoxic or carcinogenic concerns at typical exposures.

About 1 g/day of dried ginger has been shown to reduce nausea for some people, but most packaged foods contain far less (often only milligrams), so they are not intended to deliver that effect. Reviews suggest possible relief of indigestion for some users, though findings are mixed and depend on dose. On labels, ginger may appear as “ginger,” grouped under “spice(s),” or as part of “natural flavor,” which makes the actual amount hard to gauge.
Digestive Effects
Human trials around 1 g/day of dried ginger are generally well tolerated, with mild GI symptoms (heartburn, bloating, diarrhea) in a subset of users. People with reflux may notice heartburn sooner, especially with larger amounts or concentrated forms. Trace food-use levels (tens–hundreds of ppm) are much lower than studied supplement doses and rarely cause issues. If you experience discomfort, reduce intake or avoid supplement-level dosing.
Limit Consumption
Pregnancy: Trials around 1 g/day of dried ginger have shown benefit for nausea without identified risks at that dose and duration; discuss any supplement use with your clinician. People on anticoagulants or with bleeding disorders should consult a clinician before using high-dose supplements, as caution is prudent even though evidence of increased bleeding risk is limited and inconsistent. Infants and young children are more vulnerable to foodborne illness, so rely on brands with strong pathogen controls for spice-containing foods. Individuals with reflux may be more sensitive to heartburn from larger amounts.
