Native to acidic bogs and marshes of northeastern North America, the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) was gathered by Indigenous communities, who mixed it with dried meat and fat to make pemmican—an ultralong-keeping ‘power bar’ of its day. Colonists adopted the berry for sauces and preserves; large-scale bog cultivation spread across New England and Wisconsin in the 19th–20th centuries.

Most people tolerate typical servings well. The fruit’s acidity may cause mild stomach discomfort or reflux in sensitive individuals, especially with undiluted juice. Large volumes of sweetened products can contribute to bloating or diarrhea in some people due to the sugar load. Reported tolerability is good at moderate intakes (about 240–480 mL/day of juice), with issues more likely at very high doses or with concentrated extracts.
Limit Consumption
Women with recurrent UTIs may be the group most likely to benefit from cranberry products. Individuals with a history of kidney stones should limit very high juice intakes and discuss use with their clinician. People on warfarin should avoid heavy cranberry consumption or high‑dose extracts unless monitored, as rare INR increases have been reported at high intakes. For young children, whole fruit forms without added sugar are preferable to juice.
